Dear _________, M.P.

My name is ____________ and I am a member of your constituency. I am writing to you asking for your support of the implementation of a guaranteed livable basic income. Canada has already had two major basic income experiments, Mincome and the Ontario Basic Income Pilot. Canada does not need another experiment, it is time for us to implement a guaranteed livable basic income.

Results from the Dauphin Mincome experiment showed that:

  • Hospitalizations went down by 8.5%

    • Accidents / Injuries accounted for most of that decline

    • Mental health-related issues accounted for most of the decline in visits to a family doctor.

  • Grade 12 enrollment rates exceeded 100%

    • At one point, grade 12 enrollment rates had exceeded 100% and the following years it had hovered close to 100%, exceeding both Winnipeg and Rural Manitoba. Enrollment rates exceeded 100% as many individuals returned to complete their high school education which was not possible because to their financial situation prior to Mincome.

  • Recipients had said they felt like there was no stigma with receiving the payment.

Results from the Ontario Basic Income Pilot showed that:

  • All individuals that received basic income report benefiting from it. Benefits included housing stability, food security, financial stability, and improvements in their mental and physical health.

  • Participants had fewer doctor and hospital visits and reported that it was easier for them to access prescription drugs. This provided savings for the healthcare system.

  • 25% of recipients started an educational or training program.

It is clear from the Dauphin site that the implementation of basic income will bring positive results across Canada. An 8.5% reduction in hospitalizations will save billions of dollars that can be reinvested into a basic income program. We can think about implementing a basic income as an investment into someone’s life. An investment where they will be able to thrive and start to help other Canadians. I ask that you support the implementation of universal means-tested guaranteed livable basic income.
