About
My name is Manpinder and I am a grade 12 student at the Maples Met, a Big Picture Learning project and internship based high school in Winnipeg, Manitoba. During grade 12, students are asked to do a year-long project related to something they are interested in. For me, that was finding ways to help reduce poverty in Canada. Students are also asked to create a final product which shares what they learned. My final product is this website that includes the following:
-
Basic Income
-
Poverty Outcomes
-
Resources
-
Get Involved
-
Contact Me
The basic income section of the website highlights two basic income experiments that were done in Canada, Mincome and the Ontario Basic Income Pilot. I also discuss two current examples of basic income in Canada, Old Age Security and the Canada Child Benefit and how they could form the foundation for a basic income model in Canada. This section also includes perspectives of three individuals on how they feel basic income should be implemented and how basic income could help benefit people living in Canada. Finally, this section includes frequently asked questions about a basic income.
The poverty outcomes section of the website discusses health outcomes for people who are in poverty and the social determinants of health. It also discusses how increasing Medicare coverage in Canada will benefit individuals who are currently in poverty. This section also includes an interactive map that shows different outcomes for people that live in different areas of the city.
This website also includes a page, titled 'Get Involved', where you will find a template for a letter that you can send to your Member of Parliament. This template highlights the need for basic income in Canada and shows your support for basic income. The page also includes a link to the House of Commons website where you can find out who your Member of Parliament is.
You will also find a page with additional resources on the topics discussed throughout the website and the sources of stats I used throughout the map. There will also be a list of organizations supporting poverty reduction and basic income. If you have any questions, comments, or feedback, you can reach out to me on the ‘Contact Me’ page.
I would also like to thank my mentors, Madrin, Boyd, and Dr. Noralou Roos for their help during this project as well as my advisor Jason.
